What motivated you to choose Confederation College, and what inspired your decision to pursue your program?

My journey at Confederation College began in my younger years, during which I faced numerous challenges that impacted my performance. However, I ultimately made the decision to return because of my passion for working in the social field, particularly in social work. I chose this program because of my lived experience, which enables me to bring a genuine perspective to the profession. Having faced significant challenges in my life, I understand the difficulties people encounter while striving to move forward and create positive change.
Throughout my life experiences, I often struggled to connect with professionals who lacked personal understanding of my situation. This changed when I met a remarkable woman who truly understood my struggles. Her support was invaluable and inspired me, demonstrating that success is attainable.
Now, I aspire to be that same source of inspiration and guidance for others. I want to help individuals navigate their own challenges and achieve their goals in life, utilizing a harm reduction approach that meets people where they are at that moment. This approach is crucial in fostering understanding and support, allowing for meaningful connections and positive outcomes in the social work field.

What was the most impactful experience during your time at Confederation College, whether academic, extracurricular, or personal?

The entire experience at Confederation College has been truly impactful for me. When I first returned, I definitely had doubts about my abilities. However, as I progressed through my courses, I gradually began to recognize my own capability and potential.

I thoroughly enjoyed my classes, which not only expanded my knowledge but also ignited my passion for learning. Additionally, the friendships I formed during this time played a significant role in my journey, providing me with a supportive community that encouraged my growth. Engaging with various subjects further enriched my experience and solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in social work.

How has your time at Confederation College shaped your journey, both personally and professionally?

My time at Confederation College has significantly shaped my journey, both personally and professionally. It has effectively prepared me for further education at Lakehead University, allowing me to pursue my passion for social work in a meaningful way.

During this period, I completed my second field placement with an agency that I care deeply about. This experience not only enhanced my practical skills but also helped me gain confidence in my abilities. I began to truly believe in myself and recognized that I was pursuing a career in a field that adds meaning to my life. Overall, the foundation I built at Confederation College has been instrumental in guiding me toward my goals and ensuring that I am well-equipped for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in my social work career.

What are you up to now?

Currently, I am living happily with my family. I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Social Work at Lakehead University, which aligns perfectly with my passion for the field.
In addition to my studies, I also serve as the Director of Outreach and Engagement at Elevate NWO, where I can apply my skills and experience to make a positive impact in the community. Balancing my family life, education, and professional responsibilities allows me to grow both personally and professionally while contributing to the well-being of others.

I had the opportunity to participate in Empower2Recover as a speaker, where I shared my journey with others. While it was a scary experience for me, I was encouraged by the belief that my story was powerful and could inspire those facing similar challenges.
Additionally, I was nominated as a Holiday Hero, which was an incredible honor. This recognition reflects the progress I’ve made and the accomplishments I am achieving in my life, things I once thought would never be possible for me. I’m excited to continue making a positive impact in both my personal and professional life!
